Here is a honest TomTom 540TM review by Dennis E. Coburn ‘EE Consultant’ who gives 5 out of 5 stars for this GPS “Love this GPS!”

1. My first gripe was that the display was not readable when mounted on the windshield with daylight streaming down on it, but there’s a solution. If you don’t like the color schemes on the 540 go to [...] . You can download a number of free schemes that have been created by other users. Try the “Holland” scheme. It really improves daylight readability. If you don’t like any of the ones on the site download their FREE color scheme editor and create your own. Instructions are available on the site.

2. The touch screen is a little flaky and sometimes slow to respond. However, here’s the way to use it: First press on the icon, etc. you want and keep your finger there until it turns blue then remove your finger. It will work fine. Don’t start tapping it or you’ll end up where you don’t want to be.

3. When you do a search for a POI on your route a list appears showing a number of places from which you can choose. Along side each item in the list a small icon will appear. TomTom doesn’t bother to tell you what the icons mean but I will. A straight GREEN arrow means the POI is on your route. A bent GREEN arrow means you’ll have to take a small detour from your route to get to the POI. A bent YELOW arrow means you’ll have to take a longer detour and NO ICON means the POI is not on your route at all.

4. The lifetime map update feature is great! Free map updates for the lifetime of the product. (TomTom defines the life-time as something like ‘as long as they can get map updates and as long as the 540 is a current product’. I guess this means until they decide they’re no longer going to give you free updates. Hmmm. Still, for now it’s great.)

5. I love the traffic feature and the IQ routes. IQ routes take into account the time of day and history of traffic along the various routes. Nice. The traffic function uses the TMC (traffic message channel) which transmits traffic info via radio signals. The 540 displays traffic delays on your route, calculates alternate routes, determines if they are faster and then offers to re-route you around the hold up. In a recent trip from Manchester, New Hampshire to Boston this saved me nearly an hour’s travel time. Normally TMC is a subscription service but with the 540 it’s free…again for the lifetime of the 540. I didn’t expect this to work very well but it really does.

6. Another thing I really like are the bright green arrows showing you which lanes to travel in on a multi-lane highway when you’re coming up to an exit you must take or an exit that you shouldn’t take. Makes it a lot easier.

7. I don’t want to write a book but just let me say I’m VERY happy with the XXL-540TM. It’s the third or fourth GPS I’ve owned and it’s far and away the best.
